Zhanat Chaykina Ansabalykzy

Zhant Chaykina Ansabalykzy was born on June 14, 1954, in the center of Ertis district, Pavlodar region.

From 1961 to 1971, she studied at the I. Altynsarin Secondary School-Gymnasium in Pavlodar.

At school, Zhant actively participated in cultural activities, such as singing, dancing, poetry reading, taking part in dramatic performances, hosting concerts, and events in various cultural programs.

At that time, she was a soloist in the famous folk choir of the tractor factory, led by A. Shiler, and also worked as a broadcaster for the newly formed regional television. She was also actively involved in public work, managing the school’s Pioneer organization and later the Komsomol organization. For these abilities, her school honored her by sending her to the Republican Young Performers Competition in Almaty, and to cities like Kazan, Ulyanovsk, Kuibyshev, Moscow, and Klintsy, as well as the All-Union “Artek” camp.

In 1971, Zhant Chaykina was accepted into the “Acting” faculty of the Kurmangazy State Conservatory in Almaty under the course of People’s Artist of Kazakhstan, Sh. Zhandarbekova.

Zhant’s first role and her graduation work was the character Inga in V. Yezhov’s “The Nightingales” play. This deep, psychological role of Inga, full of internal conflict, opened the way for the future actress to become a prominent stage figure.

In 1975, Zhant, along with her classmates, founded the regional Kazakh Drama Theatre in Taldykorgan, where they achieved great success. Three years later, during the theatre’s tour in the capital, Almaty, theatre critics highly praised her performances in T. Akhtanov’s “Kushik Kuyue” as Botka, “Father and Son” as Aliya, A. Vampilov’s “First Son” as Nina, and Sh. Aitmatov’s “Armanim-Aselim” as Asel, awarding her a first-class diploma.

With each performance, Zhant honed her stagecraft, showcasing her natural talent and broad creative range in both classical Kazakh and foreign works.

Her notable roles include:

  • M. Auezov’s Karagoz, Mağış (in Abai), Qarashash (in Khan Kene), Eңligi, Jüztaýlygy (in Night Serenade);
  • G. Musirepov’s Aqan Serі – Aqtokty and Qozy Korpesh-Bayan Sulu as Aqtokty and Bayan;
  • B. Maiynin’s Shuganin Belgesi as Shuga;
  • A. Chekhov’s Sonya (in Uncle Vanya);
  • W. Shakespeare’s Katarina (in Taming of the Shrew);
  • C. Goldoni’s Biatrice (in The Servant of Two Masters).

She also starred in “Kazakhfilm” studio’s films, playing the roles of Alimash in “Unpaid Debt” and Rosa in “The Running Target”.

In 1985, Zhant was awarded a special diploma at the Republic Youth Festival “Zhiger” in Almaty for her role as Janar in R. Seysembaev’s “Kazbek’s Return”.

She worked alongside People’s Artists N. Zhanturyn, A. Moldabekov, and People’s Artist of the USSR, director A. Mambetov, portraying the leading role of Katarina in Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”.

In 1991, she was awarded the title Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR by a government decree.

In 1995, she received a special diploma for her role as Qarashash in “Kuyshi” at the Republic contest held in Almaty for I. Zhansugirov’s 100th anniversary.

Zhant actively contributed to the artistic council and trade union, working hard to address her colleagues’ needs. For this, the theatre staff and city leaders trusted her and elected her twice as a deputy to the Taldykorgan City Council.

In 1996, Zhant was invited to the Pavlodar Regional J. Aimautov Musical Drama Theatre, where she reunited with her local audience, performing the role of Sholpan in M. Auezov’s “Ayman-Sholpan”.

In 1998, she won the award for Best Female Role at the VI Republic Theatre Festival in Taraz for her performance in “Kuzeyude”, and in 2000, she won the awards for Best Female Role and Creative Exploration at the VIII Republic Theatre Festival in Pavlodar for her performance in Shakespeare’s Sonnets.

That year, Zhant Chaykina performed the role of Maria Stuart in Schiller’s “Maria Stuart” at the Pavlodar Regional A.P. Chekhov Russian Drama Theatre, delighting local audiences.

Zhant’s vocal abilities also became prominent in romantic and classical music performances.

Her artistic level rose with performances in roles such as:

  • Cordelia and Fool in W. Shakespeare’s King Lear;
  • The Poet in Shakespeare’s Sonnets;
  • Medea in Euripides’ Medea;
  • Zarichnaya in A.P. Chekhov’s The Seagull;
  • Earth Mother in Sh. Aitmatov’s Mother Earth.

In 2004, she received the Best Female Role award for her performance in Euripides’ Medea at the XII Republic Theatre Festival in Kostanay.

Zhant actively participated in charitable events as a member of the Businesswomen’s Association of Pavlodar.

In 2008, she was invited to the State Academic Kazakh Musical Drama Theatre named after Kalibek Kuanyshbaev in the capital, where she was involved in several new productions.

Her roles in recent years include:

  • Galya in Sh. Murtaza and O. Akzharkin Sarensbek’s “Alzhir Azasy”);
  • Khanuma in A. Tsagereli’s “Gamardzhoba!”;
  • Derekgul Erekshievna in E. Zhusbek’s “Wedding”;
  • Nurjamal in K. Junisov’s “Love Melodrama”;
  • Zhann in J.M. Shevre’s “Formula of Goodness”;
  • Kamka in G. Musirepov’s “Kyz Zhibek”;
  • Boldukhan in M. Bayzhiev’s “Tyl Tabysqandar”;
  • Zhertekshi in “Er Tostik” folklore performance;
  • Qorghansyzdyng Kuni as Grandma in M. Auezov’s “The Day of the Defenseless”;
  • General’s wife in T. Assemkulov’s “Kunambay”;
  • Balkiya, Kosh in Kh. Altai and Kh. Oralai’s “The Fleeing People of Altai”;
  • Rosa aunts in E. Schmidt’s “Letters”.

In 2012, she won the Best Female Role nomination at the Republic Theatre Festival in Kostanay for her role as Zhann in J. Shevre’s “Formula of Goodness”.

Zhant Ansabalykzy also translated several plays into Russian and Kazakh for the theatre.

She was honored with numerous awards, including recognition from the Ministry of Culture, city and regional councils, and special diplomas over the years.

In 2012, she was awarded the “Pavlodar Region – 75 Years” commemorative medal.

In 2015, she was named a recipient of the “Order of Honour”.

In 2016, she received the “Labor Veteran” medal.

In 2021, she was awarded the Certificate of Honour from the Kazakhstan Industry Union of Culture, Sports, Tourism, and Media Employees.
