November 15, 1991 — the day our theatre’s history began!
The Kazakh State Academic Musical Drama Theatre named after K. Kuanyshbayev opened its curtains on November 15, 1991, with the production of G. Müsirepov’s play “Akan Sery – Aktokty”, staged by the founder of the theatre, director, and Honoured Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Zhakyp Omaruly.
The theatre received its first award in 1996 at the international “Tuganlyk” theatre festival of Turkic-speaking countries held in Ufa.
Gifted cultural figures such as Zhakyp Omaruly, Kadyr Zhetpisbayev, and People’s Artist of the USSR, “Khalyk Kakhramany” Azirbayzhan Mambetov led this sacred arts institution that fulfills the nation’s spiritual needs.
The repertoire of the K. Kuanyshbayev Kazakh National Musical Drama Theatre includes classical works renewed in a contemporary style, as well as notable pieces of national and world dramaturgy. The company, which has achieved significant success at numerous festivals in Kazakhstan and abroad, has a clear creative mission — to develop Kazakh theatre art and authentically convey the connection between the past and the present through the highest form of stage art.
