The plot of the film tells the story of an intellectual family living in the city of Astana. Muhambet, a professor at one of the universities in the capital, and his wife Suimkhan have a daughter named Desdemona. The main problem is that Desdemona doesn’t know a single word in Kazakh. One day, Muhambet and Suimkhan decide to go on vacation abroad but don’t know whom to leave Desdemona with. Fortunately, at that moment, their long-awaited sister Boldykhan arrives from the village. However, the problem remains unsolved, as Desdemona speaks only Kazakh, and her sister doesn’t know Russian. At this moment, the parents decide to hire a translator for them. This becomes the solution to their problem…
The play “Tıl Tabysqandar” raises not only the issue of language but also touches upon the theme of losing the connection with the native village and the roots that go deep into the Kazakh people.
